> What is Occupational Health
Occupational Health is the relationship between health and work. It assesses the impact of the workplace (potential health risk) on the well-being of the employee or assesses the impact of illnesses or disability on his or her ability to work.

Occupational Health actively promotes and maintains good health within the workplace also insuring compliance with the law. It also aims to support those employees who have health issues temporary or long term. It can identify work and non-work factors likely to affect an employee.

Occupational Health can and should provide health education to employees.

It offers guidance on adaptation and restrictions necessary for an individual with a health problem at the work place.

Occupational Health should be regarded as one of the core functions of your business.

It is a resource for both the employer and the employee.
> Why you need Occupational Health input
  • Enhance your company’s image as progressive and a caring employer – motivate employees – create positive attitude.
  • Re-assurance to employer and employees. Support your workforce.
  • Comply with Health and Safety Legislation and Employment Law, for example DDA, reporting to RIDDOR etc.
  • Reduce costs – absenteeism is very costly – timely Occupational Health Advice plus assessments can help to reduce these costs, that is minimise and manage sickness absence.
  • Reduce risk and the cost of litigation – bad claims records raise insurance premiums – Occupational Health intervention can help to avoid claims or minimise their size.
  • Reduce staff turnover – A healthy workplace is essential to high job satisfaction, motivated employees and optimum staff retention leading to high morale and enhance productivity.
  • Increased profitability.

Types of Occupational Health services available (click on a service for more information):

> Pre-employment - recruitment
  • Offer a wide range of medical assessments tailored to your needs from the basic medical to full executive type screens. We can match our medical examinations to satisfy Medical Insurers for high-level employees for example senior managers.
  • Offer pre-employment screens by means of health questionnaire - then clarification after this. Pease note this is a separate service.
  • We aim for quick turn around which we understand is essential for this kind of medical.
  • We can assess whether an individual is suitable for a proposed job role considering for example fitness for manual handling or whether they can cope with pressure (stress); offer a baseline health check, assist you in recognising responsibilities under DDA and identify at an early stage health issues that may require adaptations/restrictions at the workplace.
  • Such medical examinations demonstrate to the prospective employee value plus care for their health and hopefully reduce staff turnover costs/sickness absence.

For details of what is involved in pre-employment medicals please ring and talk to one of our team.

> Sickness absence management
  • This is a process where we work with the employer and employee and their GP/specialist to facilitate employees returning to productive work after accidents or periods of illness at the earliest date possible but at the same time ensuring it is medically safe and appropriate. Return to work may include a structured rehabilitation programme - that is a graduated return to work following significant accidents/illness
  • We conduct a review of employees after accidents at work.
  • Carry out medical assessments on individuals returning to work after significant illness or accidents.
  • We are able to provide important liaison between GP/Specialist, employee and employer.
  • We are able to consider the cost benefits of referring an employee for private medical opinion/treatment for example work related skin problems and muscular skeletal conditions – such as physiotherapy.
  • We can assess individual employees with long-term sickness absence regarding ill health/retirement.
  • We can assess individual employees case with regard to specific pension fund requirement.
  • Dr Andrews has experience working with a number of pension trusts.
  • Should you have any concerns around the sickness absence in your business please do not hesitate to contact one of our team for a no cost confidential discussion.
> Stress management and awareness
  • Your workforce is your greatest asset. Stress is a significant problem affecting commerce and industry today particularly in the present economic climate.
  • It is better to be pro-active within this area to avoid under performance, lengthy sickness absence and the potential for litigation.
  • We recommend rapid assessment of an individual with sickness felt likely to be attributable to stress. We prefer if possible to work with the individual, employee management and their GP/Specialist whilst they are still at work in order to be able to define issues and address them when necessary and then make adjustments in their working pattern
